Pictures and Voices from 2006 - Working 2 Walk in Washington

Special thanks to the Christopher Reeve Foundation for their continued fight against paralysis and Unite to Fight for making this weekend possible.

This unforgettable weekend was filled with meeting the top scientists in the field as well as a remarkable group of survivors and their families!

I had a great time in DC, what an incredible experience.

You guys have made a lobbyist and advocate out of me!

  Kelly Giannattasio

It was truly a wonderful event and an absolutely beautiful day!

The real stars of the rally were not the politicians though, no, it was definitely Noah Smith, Jesse Billauer (from Rolling On?, you know, the surfer dude), Brooke Ellison (who announced that she is running for a seat in the state legislature in NY), Dr. Wise Young, Professor X, and of course, the stunningly beautiful Bethany.

May 2, 2006 was a green and lovely early Spring day in Washington, DC.  It was the third day of a rally put on by Working 2 Walk and the Christopher Reeve Foundation.  Now as we waited for the speakers, it occurred to me that everyone around me, in this glittering sea of wheelchairs, family and friends, all were activists.
We do not stick our finger in the ocean; we are in the ocean: we are the ocean. Every move creates ripples.  Every action we take—or do not take—affects everything.

       (The irrepressible) Don Reed

Today was rally day, followed by a train of chairs and ab's headed over to speak our truth to the congress. Inside one of the senate office buildings, walking down a long marble hallway, I had a vision of a hundred chairs filling the thing up and making it impossible for all those self-important suits to step around us.

Unless the cure is done by next spring, make it your business to come here and demand it.   Squeaky wheel, etc.--but it's also massively fun and kind of mind-boggling.

                                                                              Kate Willette

The symposium was a perfect balance of information regarding what has been done, what is currently being researched, and what there is potential to be in the future of SCI.  The knowledge and passion shared by everyone involved including the doctors, researchers, advocates, the individuals with SCI and their family and friends made the day a perfect and inspiring start for the rally.

Being in DC and meeting everyone was a powerful, mind-bending experience.
We are a community of truly amazing people and I am honored to have met
those of you who were there.

Well, I never will forget last year but this year will forever be etched in my memory as well. Everything was so beautifully executed and so professionally done but what will remain with me throughout the years will be the people who were there. These growing families of advocates are the most inspirational people I have ever known.

We as a population can not sit and wait. We must meet the scientists half way, in our personal rehab and as advocates. To sit around only stagnates our own frustration. As a proactive population, change will be generated at a much faster pace. In short, we must bear the brunt of the load. Every person capable of advocacy must do their part, if we want results sooner than later. Talk is cheap, action is the drawing power.
