WHO: Working 2 Walk is hosted by Unite 2 Fight Paralysis (U2FP) and the Kennedy Krieger Institute. U2FP was founded in May of 2005 by Susan Maus, Betheny Winkler, and Marilyn Smith. Susan and Betheny both have quadriplegic injuries, as does Marilyn's 27-year-old son. U2FP is dedicated to achieving a CURE for paralysis, not just a better way of life. WHAT: Working 2 Walk is a 3-day event for leaders in the paralysis community who want to advocate for a cure, including family members, supporters, scientists, therapists, and anyone interested in joining this critical effort. The event focuses on education and empowerment to become effective advocates. WHY: Christopher Reeve was the most visible advocate the cure effort has had. After his passing in 2004 the community struggled to find a face and voice to express their needs. Into the void rolled U2FP, collaborating with the Christopher Reeve Foundation at the inaugural Working 2 Walk in 2006. For more about U2FP's mission and activities, visit our home page. Why do we advocate for a cure? Even modest returns of function could save $8 billion/year in health care costs while vastly improving the quality of life for all those living with paralysis.
