How To Make an Appointment With Your Members of Congress

Who are your Senators and Representative?

If you aren’t sure, go to Congress.org and type your zip code in the “Write Your Legislators” box. This leads to links to contact info for your 2 Senators and 1 Representative. Try to meet with all three while you are in town.

Contact the Washington office.

After entering zip code in the white box at Congress.org, click the legislator’s name to access their contact info.  Call the DC office numbers and ask to speak to the “Scheduler.”

What do you say?

You will likely get put into a voicemail.  Here is a draft script:

“Hi, my name is ______, and I am a constituent of ________.  I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with the Senator (or Congressman) on the afternoon of April 15.  I can be reached at xxx-xxx-xxxx.  I look forward to hearing from you.  Thank you.”

If they ask what you would like to discuss, mention scientific research and health issues surrounding paralysis.

Some offices may ask for a written request to be faxed or emailed.  The same sentiment can be expressed in written form.

Things to keep in mind:

You may have to call back more than once.  This meeting is a priority for you, but may not be for the staff person.

Remain polite and appreciative of their time and consideration.
